The starlet — who’s sunnier but just as precocious in real life as she is on TV — describes her personal style as “definitely kind of vintage inspired, but definitely mixed with lots of modern pieces to create an overall look.” In a conference panel about the fashion of “Mad Men,” she explained how Sally’s wardrobe has changed. “Sally’s style has kind of evolved and matured over the years,” Kiernan said. “She started off wearing more of the bouffant style dresses and now she’s kind of going towards the classic shift, and she’s wearing a lot of pleated skirts, Peter Pan collars, cardigans, really cool trench coats. … I’d say overall her style is scruffy, and she has like a typical East Coast closet [with her] Mary Janes and her saddle shoes.” (A recent episode depicted Sally’s rapidly maturing fashion sense when she donned a glittery dress and go-go boots, the latter of which her dad Don Draper promptly made her remove.) Kiernan’s such an avid fan of fashion that she’s even whipped up some of her own designs, although she didn’t get to wear them. “I’ve designed three dresses so far, and two I’ve had to give away,” she told the panel. “By the time I sketch them and actually go downtown, get the fabric, and have them made, I have grown out of them. [But] I just couldn’t part with one of them, because it’s so pretty.”

Kiernan was just 7 when “Mad Men” premiered in 2007, so she’s obviously changed quite a bit since then — and not just when it comes to what she wears. In school, for instance, she’s now an eighth grader, thanks to independent study, which she does instead of traditional school so that she can work. “I like doing independent study,” she noted to omg!. “I get through the grades a lot faster. I’m supposed to be in sixth [grade].” Still, Kiernan admitted that “real school” seems like it would be fun, but even a discussion about that goes back to clothing! “There’s a school right near my house, and I want to wear the uniform so badly.”

In years to come, expect to see Kiernan sporting something stylish at the red carpet premiere of something in a genre other than drama. The teen, who recently played an exaggerated version of herself on the sitcom “Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23,” says she’s a fan of comedy. However, the fellow thespian she respects the most is actually more famed for her dramatic chops. “Meryl Streep is one of my favorite actresses. I think it’s really awesome how she transforms herself into every role and gets into it and does amazing work,” Kiernan said. Her favorite performance from the “Iron Lady” actress, who’s won the Oscar for Best Actress three times? “‘Julie and Julia’ is just one of my favorite movies ever, I have to say.”

It’s rare that before a book is even released, a major network decides to transform it into a television pilot. By the time Kiera Cass’ second novel, The Selection, came out on April 24, Friday Night Lights actress Aimee Teegarden had already accepted the role as the lead (America Singer)—alongside Ten Things I Hate About You‘s Ethan Peck and The Chronicles of Narnia‘s William Moseley—in The CW’s adaptation of the dystopian novel. In The Selection, thirty-five girls are given the opportunity to live in a palace and compete for the heart of a prince and a lifetime of luxury. It’s like a dystopian The Bachelor meets Cinderella. There’s a love triangle, of course, as America is in love with a boy back home when she gets shipped off to the palace. We asked Kiera about her writing process, favorite books, and how she plans to end the trilogy.

What inspired The Selection?
“The Selection was born after thinking about Esther and Cinderella. Esther is from the Bible, and her story is that after the Queen offends the King, he decides to have a beauty pageant to replace her. Esther is one of the hundreds of girls scooped up to take the Queen’s place. I always wondered about her heart. Before she was taken away, did she maybe like the boy next door? And Cinderella, well, she never asks for a prince, just a dress and a night off. So, when she gets the prince, is she happy? Did she get what she actually wanted?

Your book has drawn comparisons to both The Hunger Games and The Bachelor. Did either come to mind when you wrote this?
“No, the first time that I watched The Bachelor was actually after I wrote the book. I did watch a lot of Miss America pageants! The biggest comparison I can think of to The Hunger Games is the idea of a lottery and the fact that it takes place in the future, but the series never crossed my mind. I’ve written a light, girly book; The Hunger Games stories are far more epic and intense.”

There are two books to come after The Selection. Do you already know how the trilogy will end?
“Yes. It’s not what I had originally intended, but I do know how it’s going to end. The second book should come out in Spring 2013 and the third will come out a year later.”

Can you describe your writing process?
“I wrote The Selection on and off for two years, and then realized I was telling the story completely wrong. I ended up re-writing a lot of it. After starting in 2008, I finally started looking for an agent to publish the book in January of 2010.”

What are your favorite books?
“I always tell people they have to read The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. The first page was so beautiful that I actually had to put it down and back away from it. I also love The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. I’m nervous and excited about that one becoming a movie.”

What do you consider the hallmarks of the YA genre?
“If you can really get into the mindset of a teenager, get to the heart of what it’s like—feeling awkward, nervous, excited, terrified—that assures a good YA book, whether it has vampires in it or not.”

What do you hope to see in the TV adaptation of The Selection?
“I was lucky to be hired as a creative consultant. The first time I read a script, I didn’t know why they changed certain things—my brain was exploding because it wasn’t word-for-word what I had written. I came to understand that the world you create through writing and the world you can create visually are two different things. What they’ve done on the show to achieve the latter is fantastic. They amped up the dystopian feel of things and added a bit more action. We’ll find out if it gets picked up or not on May 17, so we’ll see!”

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
“Learn as much as you can. There’s so much that goes on behind-the-scenes in making a book that I was completely unaware of before I started. I have a YouTube series called Behind the Book where I talk about my experiences—from signing my first contract to getting my first advance check—so people can see what it’s like.”

I’ll be recreating a look from May’s cute cover star, Chloë Moretz, every week! Her style is very cute and polished. In the first look I loved that she paired a bold patterned skirt with a simple top. This outfit works for me because it is not too overhwelming, and she sticks to a nice color scheme.
