HOLIDAY parties are over, but brilliantly bejeweled and glittering eye makeup has been lingering on, an easy way to alleviate the January blahs.

“Embellished and dramatic makeup just feels right at this moment,” said Rachel Goodwin, a celebrity makeup artist for Chanel. “It’s like a science fiction movie, a Stanley Kubrick thing.”

Or maybe it’s dreams of snow encouraging us to embrace our inner Ziggy Stardusts and experiment with gluing on crystalline rhinestones, crystals and sequins or thickly swiping glittery eye shadow.

Certainly the couture collections for fall and winter were extra-reflective. Ms. Goodwin inked the models at Chanelwith Illusion d’Ombre in Mirifique, a pitch-black shadow with starlight sparkles. At Christian Dior, Pat McGrath freehanded what looked like masquerade-ball masks, piling on iridescent discs, gold sequins and amber rhinestones on the models’ eyebrows and upper and lower lids.

And the glitter parade continued at the spring ready-to-wear collections. At Givenchy, Ms. McGrath sliced a single silver sequin in half, placing a crescent on both the upper and lower lash lines. For DSquared2, the makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury, working for MAC Cosmetics, smudged glitter around the eyes as if it were kohl liner.

When looked at among the other shiny things on the runways, like the gemstone corsets at Dolce & Gabbana, the tiaras at Louis Vuitton and the crystal chandelier earrings and glitter heels almost everywhere, bedazzled makeup seems to fit right in: it’s another way to twinkle and shimmer right now.

“The bedazzled look is going to be big for spring,” said Ms. McGrath, who also piled on jewel tones at Dolce & Gabbana’s spring show using the brand’s Khol Collection jade and silvery burgundy eyeliners. “After a few seasons of really pared down, minimalist looks, we are yearning for a touch of drama. I think the trend for color will only grow, with women becoming more excited by distinct pigments and strong textures.”

Celebrities, and not just Lady Gaga or Katy Perry, have even begun to try eye bling on the red carpet. Most notably, Emma Watson’s eyes were lined metallic shadow and glued-on gold leaf for the New York premiere of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” in July. Anne Hathaway wore crystal-accented false eyelashes to host the Academy Awards in February.

“We’ve seen everything,” Ms. Goodwin said. “We’ve seen red lips, smoky eyes and lots of glowing skin. I would love to see women experiment and be slightly more risky. It’s been a little bit of a bore for a couple of years. It’s like, ‘Come on, ladies.’ ”

As a practical matter, however, do you really want to walk around with pavé lids? Maybe not. “It kind of messes with you if you’re out having cocktails,” said Ricky Wilson, a Dior makeup artist.

But there are subtler ways to put a glint or two around your eyes and still look sophisticated.

The trick is keeping your glitter level on the right side of Johnny Weir. Don’t try to outshine the average showgirl. Instead, use a few rhinestones or a sweep of glitter shadow to put together an avant-garde look.

“You’re creating art with it,” said Sarah Lucero, a makeup artist at Stila, whose gleaming cat-eye for Alice + Olivia’s spring runway show was done by using sparkly teal eyeliner as if it were shadow. “Don’t throw it on or pack it on. It’s like using the watercolor version of sparkle or sequins. It’s very ethereal and angelic if done in a beautiful way.”

The makeup artists interviewed admitted to prowling craft shops like Michaels for embellishments or scooping up stones online at sites like Save-on-crafts.com. “It’s like 99 cents,” Ms. Lucero said. “If it doesn’t work, throw it away.”

They suggested cutting a sequin in half and using an eyelash glue like Duo adhesive and tweezers to stick one half on each upper lash line or the corners of your eyes. “It’s a neat way to add a little glam,” Ms. Lucero said. “If it’s silver or metallic, it picks up on some type of weave or fabric in the clothing, like with a tweed dress.”

Another option is a strip of false lashes with the base lined with gunmetal studs, like Faux + DEV lashes, or black rhinestones, like Shu Uemura Dazzling Black Diamante lashes (replicas of the Shu Uemura pair made for Madonna with 0.75 carats of diamonds).

“The way to make it understated and high fashion is to keep it monochromatic,” said Raychel Wade, a makeup artist who gives lessons through her company, Cheek to Chic, and likes the look of three stones placed at the top of the cheekbone. “Do a cluster of sapphire or emerald green. It’s a big place to go less-is-more.”

For the glue-shy, another option is a glitter shadow, like Stila Jewel Shadows in citrine or golden topaz or, for more razzle dazzle, the black with gunmetal shimmer in the NARS Arabian Nights trio. Use it all over your lid. (A tip for removing stray glitter is to blot it with Scotch tape.)

“It allows you to have a piece of the trend and still look really approachable,” Ms. Lucero said. “You could go to the grocery store and look totally sexy.”

Or, to downgrade to a face that would look totally sexy at the bodega, take a glitter eyeliner, like Urban Decay Glitter Eyeliner, and swipe it over a black or brown shade.

For balance, keep the rest of your face almost makeup-free. You wouldn’t wear Miu Miu glitter pumps with a gold lamé dress, and you shouldn’t try to top sparkling eyes with heavy foundation or intense lipstick. Try transparent, glossy skin and a stained lip. “If you overdo it, it’s so teeny-bopper,” Ms. Lucero said. “They overdo everything.”

All-over glitter, it should be obvious, is not gold.

Shipping internationally, Forwardbyelysewalker.com is a partnership between Walker and the founders of online fashion boutique Revolveclothing.com.

Featuring labels ranging from Opening Ceremony to Alexander McQueen, the site caters to a variety of tastes and budgets, with Walker telling WWD versatility is important.

“Our bread and butter will always be lines like Alexander Wang, ALC and 3.1 Phillip Lim, but we want to mix that with Rochas, Rick Owens and Fendi,” she said, adding there are plans to expand the men’s offerings as well as shoes and bags.

In terms of the personalized aspect, stylist tips and behind-the-scenes videos are to feature in an accompanying web magazine which will be launched soon.

This follows an increasing trend for editorial-rich websites and stylist collaborations, as demonstrated by online shopping boutique Gilt Groupe. The firm teamed up with fitness publicationWomen’s Health earlier this month, with fitness advice and ab exercises accompanying items for sale that had been handpicked by the magazine’s editor-in-chief, while on January 9 Gilt Man debuted a 36-hour flash sale featuring celebrity stylist Brad Goreski’s top picks for winter.

Winslet, who is also a Lancôme spokesmodel, was announced as the label’s newest face last May, following in the footsteps of supermodels Gisele Bundchen and Karen Elson and film star Angelina Jolie.

Judging by the just-released video where the actress discusses the delicate Spring collection, it appears the upscale US fashion brand is looking to appeal to more curvaceous consumers.

“What I love is that the lines are a lot more relaxed and yet at the same time they still give shape. So you still get those lovely feminine curves which to me are very important,” she explains.

“You don’t have to be a size 2 or 4 to be able to wear these garments because they fall so well. They are cut for women with a shape and of course I love that. That is me all over.”

Pieces showcased from the collection include a peach knitted jumper, a white jacket, a gray belted wrap dress and a pair of pleated gray trousers, which Winslet says are ideal for “women with hips.”

Reese’s eponymous label, as well as Plenty by Tracy Reese and Frock! by Tracy Reese, all come under T.R. Designs, with WWDreporting January 10 that the firm has appointed a new CEO, Karen Castellano, to oversee the development.

“This is an amazing opportunity to take a beautiful brand, this gem of a company, and expand the product categories and distribution,” revealed Castellano, adding Reese is planning more accessories and footwear for her namesake label and Plenty.

Castellano also divulged plans to make the Tracy Reese e-commerce site “more modern, more fun and more interactive.”

This follows in the footsteps of fashion houses including Moschino, which last month revamped Moschino.com to place more emphasis on an interactive shopping experience. Along with easy access to lookbooks and runway videos, the updated site features additions such as Pic Me, allowing fans to customize their own photos with iconic Moschino-inspired motifs.

Other web-savvy designers including Burberry, Kate Spade and Coach have all learned the importance of interacting with consumers via social media as well as their websites, appearing on digital innovation blog L2′s “2011 Digital Geniuses” list.

There have been a string of Oscar de la Renta expansions of late, although the most unexpected comes in the launch of a partnership with rapper Dr. Dre on a pair of lavish designer headphones which double up as earmuffs.

Currently featuring on the “new arrivals” section of the Oscar de la Renta website, the fluffy “luxe silver fox” earmuffs surround a pair of Beats by Dr. Dre headphones.

Retailing at $695, this limited edition item is one of de la Renta’s more extravagant partnerships, compared to the label’s teaming up with US luxury stationery firm Mrs. John L. Strong on items such as note cards, invitations and place cards – the set of 12 place cards featured on the site is selling for a more accessible $50.

While de la Renta, which counts rap stars such as Nicki Minaj and Kanye West among its fans, announced the launch of a childrenswear collection for Fall 2012 just last month, the label’s Dre collaboration hints there could be hip-hop themed ventures to come for the ever-expanding brand.

Meanwhile, if the idea of headphone earmuffs appeals but the almost $700 price tag doesn’t, there is a cheaper variety available from Los Angeles-based brand Juicy Couture. The label currently offers Fair Isle-print earmuff headphones on its website for a reduced price of $69.99 (originally $98).

The designer earmuffs are just one example of how fashion houses are increasingly coming up with unexpected items to adorn with their trademark style: labels Hermès and Jimmy Choo’s luxury coffee-cup holders recently caused a stir in the fashion world thanks to their respective prices of $250 and $165.

“To debut in London with Moschino Cheap And Chic is something I have been thinking about for a while. To have presence in a new city gives the younger line a stronger, more autonomous personality,” Moschino creative director Rossella Jardini explained in a release.

“London is renowned for its contemporary style and famous sense of humor making it the perfect place to exhibit Moschino Cheap And Chic’s DNA and energy.

“I’m sure London will be the appropriate platform for this line to grow whilst still remembering its roots.”

The Moschino mainline collection will continue to show during Milan Fashion Week, in the same way that the Alexander McQueen main show will still take place during Paris Fashion Week in March, as will Stella McCartney’s despite a London debut in the form of a special one-off capsule collection show this February.

So many of the faces were familiar at the Tuesday, Dec. 6, premiere of “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” in the Westwood section of Los Angeles, including Holmes himself, actor Robert Downey, Jr., his gorgeous love interest Rachel McAdams, and director Guy Ritchie.

Jude Law, who plays Watson in the continuing series based on the famed detective created back in the 1880s by Arthur Conan Doyle, missed the festivities, but two key new players joined the glittery gala. British thespian Jared Harris, who’s best known for his work in the television series “Mad Men,” has come aboard the franchise as the legendary Professor Moriarty, Holmes’ evil nemesis, while Swedish star Noomi Rapace of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” fame adds a hint of mystery to the action film.

All very happily greeted the cheering fans who lined the streets outside the Village Theater, signing autographs and posing for photos, despite the distinctly wintry chill in the air. No one minded, for as they all agreed at an earlier press conference, the whole experience of making both “Sherlock” blockbusters has been a delight from start to finish.

“I enjoy going to work and everyone else here does, too,” Ritchie explained with a smile. “They’re also very hard work. But I don’t want the hard work to take away from the fun factor. They are really fun to make.”

“It was super intense, though,” adds Rapace. “And so much fun. And I was really nervous before. It was my first English-speaking movie. And I didn’t talk English. I didn’t speak English like three years ago. But it was very playful and easy and creative. It was fantastic.”

Also along for the joyride at the “Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows” premiere party were Amber Heard, double-Oscar-winning actress Jodie Foster, musician Pharrell Williams, director Jon Favreau, producer Joel Silver and legendary actor Max Von Sydow.

For more than a decade, the company has selected its Color of the Year, influencing product development and purchasing decisions in multiple industries including fashion, home, and beauty.

2012′s shade, PANTONE® 17-1463 Tangerine Tango, is a reddish orange shade, described by the brand as “vivacious” and “enticing.”

“Sophisticated but at the same time dramatic and seductive, Tangerine Tango is an orange with a lot of depth to it,” explainedPantone’s executive director Leatrice Eiseman.

The color looks set to play a key role in fashion and beauty trends for next year; being favored by creators including Tommy Hilfiger,Cynthia Steffe, Elie Tahari, Adrienne Vittadini and Nanette Leporefor their Spring 2012 lines.

Watch a video from the latter’s colorful Spring 12 New York Fashion Week show here, where neon dresses and bright orange lips were prevalent.

Concerning cosmetics, it was first reported December 7 that Pantone is teaming with French cosmetics brand Sephora for the very first SEPHORA + PANTONE UNIVERSETM limited edition collection. Available in US Sephora stores as of March 2012, the line will include eye shadow, lipstick, lip gloss, nail polish and accessories.

“These products allow for on-trend, uninhibited expression, while being exceptionally wearable,” Sephora PRO’s lead artist Gilbert Soliz explained.

“Whether she is looking to create a bold look featuring Tangerine Tango, or if demure trend expression is more her style, the collection allows for customized wearability.”

Other fashion items available in Tangerine Tango include garments by bridesmaid dress manufacturer Dessy and a messenger bag created for Pantone by Rickshaw of San Francisco.

Florence, Italy

Pitti Uomo is the leading men’s ready-to-wear show in Italy, overshadowing Milano Moda Uomo (January 15 – 19) and Berlin’s Premium International Fashion Trade Show (January 18-20). Created in 1972 Pitti Uomo is held in Florence twice a year, and this year’s special guest will be Valentino, showing its menswear collection ahead of the men’s international fashion weeks. A new area called Make will be unveiled, dedicated to one-off pieces from the likes of Chapal, Zonkey Boot and Marc Bernstein.

London, UK

Inspired by the US Vogue Fashion Fund, the British Fashion Council (BFC)’s Vogue Designer Fashion Fund enters its third edition in 2012 and will once again offer an up-and-coming creator a cash prize and mentoring from industry professionals. In 2011 Scottish designer Christopher Kane scooped £200,000 (€232,000), beating out E. Tautz, Nicholas Kirkwood, Osman Yousefzada, Charlotte Olympia, Jonathan Saunders, and Peter Pilotto. The inaugural edition of the fund was won by Erdem.

Marni for H&M
March 8
International

The Swedish high street retailer has collaborated with creators including Lanvin and Sonia Rykiel in the past, while the 2011 Versace for H&M line sent the H&M website into temporary meltdown and sold out in some stores in just 30 minutes. Expect similar hysteria in March 2012 when equally prestigious Italian fashion house Marni launches its debut high street collaboration at H&M. The label’s founder and creative director Consuelo Castiglioni has created the clothing and accessories line inspired by Marni’s original prints, which is for both men and women. It will be available in 260 stores worldwide and online as of March 8, 2012. 2012 will also see the release of a second round of designs from Versace creative director Donatella. Her Spring pre-collection will be available January 19, although only in countries where H&M has an e-commerce site such as the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden and Norway.

40th Baselworld
March 8 – 15
Basel, Switzerland

Every Spring around 2000 companies from the watch, jewelry and precious-stone industries unveil the latest innovations at Baselworld, with the world’s most prestigious brands such as Rolex, Chopard, Tissot, Patek Philippe and Bulgari exclusively displaying their collections. Some 100,000 visitors from the retail and wholesale market are expected to attend the 2012 expo. No event quite matches this one in its scale, although a close runner-up is the HKTDC Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair, which in September 2011 welcomed 700 local and overseas exhibitors for its 30th edition. The HKTDC Hong Kong Watch and Clock Fair 2012 is scheduled to take place September 5 – 9, 2012.
This annual ball celebrates each year’s opening of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s fashion exhibit at the Costume Institute, founded in 1948, and is dubbed the fashion industry’s Oscars thanks to the extravagant red carpet creations guests wear for their arrival. 2011′s Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty show attracted 661,509 visitors, placing it among the gallery’s 10 most visited exhibitions. The 2012 Costume Institute Gala and exhibit will focus on Italian designers Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada, exhibiting about 80 designs by Schiaparelli from the 1920s – 1950s and by Prada from the 1980s to the present day, drawn mainly from The Costume Institute’s collection and the Prada archive. Titled “Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada: On Fashion”, the expo will run May 10 to August 19, with film director Baz Luhrmann acting as creative consultant. Other key fashion exhibitions scheduled for 2012 include a Marilyn Monroe retrospective at the Museo Salvatore Ferragamo (opening June), the UK’s first retrospective of French shoe designer Christian Louboutin at The Design Museum and a Louis Vuitton Marc Jacobs expo at Les Arts Décoratifs in Paris (both launch March).

The brainchild of Vogue US editor Anna Wintour, Fashion’s Night Out was launched in 2009 and has gone on to become the world’s biggest global shopping event, reuniting consumers and retailers with all-night parties and special offers at department stores, designer shops including Alexander McQueen and high street brands like Zara worldwide. The 2011 edition was the largest yet, taking place in more than 100 cities around the world including in the US, Australia, China, the UK, France, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, Portugal, Russia, Spain, South Korea, Taiwan, and Turkey. Other more localized shopping events include the Dubai Shopping Festival, whose seventh edition will take place January 5 – February 5 and the second edition of the Istanbul Shopping Festival scheduled for June 9 – 29.

72nd Modaprima
November (dates TBA)
Florence, Italy

Modaprima is an international point of reference for mid-range women’s and men’s fashion labels aimed at large-scale distribution. 2011 saw a new location for the event, as it moved from Milan to Florence’s Stazione Leopolda, a large 19th century railway station near the old city center. The new central location increased international attendees to the event, which usually expects some 1,750 visitors and nearly 800 buyers from over 50 countries. The fair is organized by the same team behind the prestigious Italian fashion fairs Pitti Immagine Uomo and Pitti W, but has less international clout and appeal: Modaprima is primarily an industry event for European firms though it does receive exhibitors from the US and UK, in contrast with the more global New York ready-to-wear fairs Coterie and Designers & Agents.

Luxury Swiss retail giant Richemont, owner of such brands asCartier, Piaget and Jaeger-LeCoultre, is to open the world’s largest shop for luxury watches in Paris, a trade journal said Thursday.

Richemont declined to comment on the report in the usually well-informed Business Montres which quoted an internal memo saying a three-storey 2,200 square metre (24,000 square foot) shop would open early 2013.

The shop would take over the premises of the landmark Old England shop near the Place Vendome, famous for its luxury watchshops and hugely popular with Middle Eastern and Asian tourists, in particular Chinese.

France’s La Tribune daily said Richemont would pay 70 million euros ($94 million) for the site.

Swiss luxury watch distributor Bucherer would run the new shop, with Richemont stumping up the cash.

“Watch-lovers will find a top-level selection of famous and prestigious watches, in an exclusive atmosphere,” Bucherer’s management was quoted as saying in the memo dated November 30.

Cartier boss Bernard Fornas told Les Echos financial daily that the new site would make it easier to receive coachloads of tourists.

The shop would also be close to the Galeries Lafayette and Printemps department stores, favourite haunts of Chinese tourists who spend an average 1,400 euros a day shopping in Paris, duty free group Global Blue said.

Chinese tourists spend hundreds of millions of euros a year in France, and the number of Asian visitors continues to rise steeply.

An analyst who asked not to be named noted that Paris currently had no luxury flagship shop and that the proposed new location was “very strategic.”

Business Montres said that the Paris watch market would undergo major changes, with the rise of big shops forcing the closure of many small retailers.
